Peek at the Week of February 24-28

Welcome back from Winter Break!  I hope everyone had a great break from school and is ready to be back in business.

Salute to Seuss
* Please send in Dr. Seuss books with your child.  We will use these books in reading workshop.
* This Friday we will have a special breakfast in honor of Dr. Seuss' upcoming birthday.  We will have green eggs and ham.  It's always fun to see who 'dares' to eat the green eggs.

Author Visit
An author, Brian Pinkney, will be visiting our school library on Wednesday.

Math Workshop
We will be starting Unit 5 this week on Measurement.

Writing Workshop
We will be starting a new unit on Poetry.

Reading Workshop
Salute to Seuss will be our theme this week.  We will explore the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss' writing style with rhyming words and make believe words.

Mystery Reader

Love is in the air!

Valentine's Day
*Valentine cards for the class can be sent in any day this week.  We will pass them out on Friday morning.  A list with the class names was sent home on January 29th.  We will be decorating bags to use in collecting out Valentine cards.
*We will have a pizza party for our class party.  We will be eating in our classroom.  Thank you to the following families for sponsoring our lunch:

Reading Workshop
We will be reading many Valentine themed books in Reading Workshop and will study the characters in these books. 


Writing Workshop
We will be finishing up our opinion writing pieces this week.  We have had a lot of fun sharing our opinions on many topics.  Keep your eyes out for a packet of this writing coming home...restaurant and movie reviews...very insightful!


March Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences will be held March 12-14.  A letter about conferences will be send home with your child on Monday 2/10.  Please be on the lookout for this paper (white paper with a checkerboard border).


Dr. Seuss Book
We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday the week following break.  We'd love to borrow any Dr. Seuss books you have.  Please make sure your child's name in written inside the book.

Day 100

The Grandmas and Grandpas of first grade had a great time strutting their stuff for the entire school. We finished the day with a riveting game of Bingo!

Peek at the Week of February 3-7


This will be a fun week of school! 


Day 100
Day 100 of school is this Wednesday, February 5th.  First graders are putting on a parade for the whole school in the morning.  We will be dressed up as 100 year old grandmas and grandpas.  A notice went home about this 2 weeks ago. 


The Shadows Know
A scientist from High Tech High Touch will be coming to our class to do some science experiments on Wednesday afternoon. 


Writing Workshop
We continue to work on writing reviews of movies, restaurants, books, etc. We have been having a great time sharing our opinions with each other.  This week we will make our writing even better by learning how to end


Reading Workshop
We continue to do 'character work'.  Some of the topics we have been talking about:
-main vs. supporting characters
-noticing how characters change from beginning to the end
-noticing how a character talks, acts, feels
-character traits
-What lesson does my character learn?
-How does my character solve his/her problems?
