Peek at the Week of February 27-March 2

Welcome back from Winter Break!  This week marks the end of February and the start of a new month...spring is on the way!

Salute to Seuss
  • Breakfast:  This Friday we will celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with a breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham.  We will be cooking eggs in our classroom! 
  • Pajama Day:  The class has been asking for a pajama day for months so we will make Dr. Seuss Day be a Pajama day.
  • Books Needed:  We'd love to have a BIG collection of Dr. Seuss books on our Author Study bookshelf.  Please make sure your name is written inside the cover so that the books can be returned to your family at the end of the month.

Highlights of the Week February 17

  • We had a Valentine's Pizza Party.  Thank you to the parents who brought in all of the treats.  (SS)
  • We took down the Valentine flag and put up a March flag.  (MF)
  • Today we will have a Mystery Reader.  Who will come in next?  (BB)
  • Mrs. Rongoe had a baby girl named Ava.  Ava was born yesterday.  (Miss D.)
  • A group from Mrs. Rongoe's class came in and told us about sharks.  (ES)
  • After the shark group, Mrs. Wein's class came and talked about natural disasters.  (KN)
  • The natural disaster girls put our class into teams.  (RH)
  • The teams were the earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes.  (KB)
  • After they told us about natural disasters, we had a quiz.  (AM)
  • At the end of natural disasters they gave us a word search shaped in a smiley face.  (MF)
  • I got a ball for winning the shark quiz.  (LC)
  • I got a yo-yo for winning the shark quiz.  (RM)
  • JN's mom is coming in today for J's birthday.  (SS)
  • Last week we started the second turns with captains.  (BS)
  • BS, KN and I organized the entire bookshelf.  (AP)
  • This week I am the captain.  (KB)
  • In gym we played a game called Super-Volleyball.  (JN)
  • Last week it was BB's turn to be the captain.  (SS)
  • In art, we finished painting the tiles.  The tiles are for the wall near the garden.  Every grade is making a different thing in the garden.  (AM)
  •  In gym we also played Sit.  (RH)
  • My sister was in the shark group.  They made a clay model of  a shark.  (MF)
  • Last week we had the 100th day.  (CH)
  • Some families are going on vacation.  (TP)

Winter Break

Today is the last day of school before the winter break.  I hope everyone has a safe and fun-filled week off from school.  Make sure you read every day!  See you on the 27th!

Natural Disasters

Some 4th grade girls came to our class and taught us about earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes.  They had a cool spinning wheel and did a quiz at the end.  We also got a word search puzzle to do.  It was fun!

Sharks!

Today some 4th graders came to our class and taught us about sharks and how they move.   They gave us a quiz at the end of the presentation and then gave each person a bookmark for a prize.

Peek at the Week of February 13-17

Happy Valentine's Day! 

We will celebrate this 'lovely' holiday on Tuesday with a pizza party lunch.  Our classroom will be called the "Love Cafe".  Thank you to the families who are sponsoring this event.

Valentine's Day cards can be sent into school.  Each child will bring home a bag full of fun notes from their classmates.  It's always a fun day at school.

Next week (February 20-24) will be the Winter Break.

First Grade Grandmas and Grandpas

In honor of Day 100, the first graders dressed up as 100 year old Grandmas and Grandpas.  The outfits were awesome!

Peek at the Week of February 6-10

It's the Day 100 of School!  I hope to see some fun '100 year olds' in school on Monday.  We'll do some fun activites using the number 100 as a theme.


This Thursday our class will have a visit from a scientist who will teach us about light and shadows.  The name of the program is "The Shadow Knows".


Math:  The BIG excitement for this week is that we will be starting our second math book!  The class is very excited to have a fresh, new book.  We will begin Unit 7 this week.  Unit 7 is titled "Measurement and Geometry".  This week's lesson will focus on 2-D and 3-D shapes, Naming and Describing Shapes, Identifying Faces of 3D shapes, and Capacity of Containers.


Writing Workshop:  We are wrapping up our "How To" books and will start on our second nonfiction project which is called "All About" books.  We will spend time this week looking at published "All About" books and start brainstorming possible writing ideas.

Reading Workshop:  We are continuing our unit on nonfiction.  Next week we will be doing a special project called "The Buddy Study".
