I hope everyone had a great 3-day weekend!

It was great seeing so many people on Field Day.  This week we hope to see you at our show, "Pass It On" on Friday, June 3rd at 10:30 in the Common Room. 

Your child should have brought home an invitation for Poet Palooza.  This is our class poetry reading.  We will be entertaining you with poems next Friday, June 10th at 2:30 in our classroom.  Light refreshments will follow the poetry reading. 

This week we will do an author study on Laura Numeroff.  We will read her "If You Give A ______" books in Reading Workshop and will use her stories to inspired us to write our own versions of "If You Give a _____ a ______" stories in Writing Workshop.

There will be 2 more weeks of homework and spelling lists.  Friday, June 10th will be the last day for homework.

Highlights of the Week May 27

  • KK, KL and EW were good co-captains.  (AK)
  • EW moved to her new state right after field day.  (CB)
  • Miss M.'s class won the first grade tug of war challenge at field day.  (CH)
  • Field Day was so much fun!  (KK)  It was 90 minutes long.  (KS)  We played 5 games at field day.  (CF)  The games we played were:  Capture the Flag, Water Relay, Wacky Relays, Target Practice, and Tug of War.  (MC)  Some kids got wet!  (KS)
  • In gym Miss Dineen was the gym teacher this week.  We played Spud, Sit and Doctor Dodgeball.  (KK)
  • DG's mom brought in firecracker popsicles for field day.  (AK)
  • In Writing Workshop we picked our poems for Poet Palooza!  (DG)  We made invitations for the show.  (JF)
  • We practiced the "Pass It On Show" with the props. We stood on the risers.  We used a microphone. (SM, CF, MM)
  • Today there will be 2 Mystery Readers!  One in the morning and one in the afternoon.  (KE)  
  • AB brought Hootie to Maine for Memorial Weekend.  We think Hootie will eat some lobster!  (AK and LJD)
  • One week from today will be the big "Pass It On" show.  (CH)
  • For Fun Friday today, Miss D. says that we can choose to do either Reading or Writing Workshop.  We can work on our own projects.  (GC)
  • There are 3 more weeks of school!  (CH)

Peek at the Week of May 23-27

This will be EW's last week with our class because her family is moving to North Carolina.  We will miss E so much, but we know she will make lots of new friends at her new school.  We will have a little going away party on Wednesday.

This Thursday is field day for first graders.  Parents can join us in the front fields from 12:45-2:15.  In the case of rain, we will have field day on Friday at the same time. 

Last week we started practing with Mrs. McGettigan's class for our June 3rd show.  It is fun to put all of the songs together and get to see how the show will be set up. 

Our caterpillars arrived last Wednesday and we are taking good care of them.  We are observing them and waiting to see the changes they will go through.

This week we will be selecting poems for our June 10th Poetry Reading called "Poet Pallooza".  Parents are invited to our classroom for this special year-end show.  It will take place at 2:30 in our classroom.  You child will be bringing home an invitation this week.

Highlights of the Week May 20

  • CH and AK and AH were great co-captains.  (KE)
  • Our caterpillars arrived on Wednesday.  They are already growing and getting used to their new cage habitat. (DG & AGS)
  • Today we practiced for our spring show.  We lined up on the risers.  We got to use the microphone!  (EW & CF)
  • We have library this afternoon.  The librarians from the Darien Library will be coming to tell us about the Summer Reading Program.  (AB & AK & Miss D.)
  • In gym we picked our field day teams.  (HB)
  • In gym we did some gymnastics.  (AK) We climbed ropes and swung on rings.  We also played a game called Duel.  (KK)  And we did jumprope.  (LJD)
  • We had our spelling test this morning.  (JF)
  • In Writing Workshop we wrote color poems.  (AMS)  We wrote nature poems.  (LJD)  We also wrote poems about animals and food.  (MC & GS & CH)
  • In Writing Workshop we will have "D Day" next week.  (KE)  D Day means decision day.  It means we will pick out poems for Poet Pallooza.  (AGS)
  • In art we made self-portraits.  (CF)  We used markers.  We will finish our self-portraits soon.  (KS)
  • On June 3rd we will perform "Pass it On" with Mrs. McGettigan's class.
  • On June 10th we will have a Poetry Reading called "Poet Pallooza".

Peek at the Week of May 9-13

We will be attending an author visit on Tuesday in the library.

A notice went home last week asking for $1 from each family to use towards purchasing a Thank You gift for Mr. Allen.  The gift will be presented to him at the First Grade Musical in June.

Reading and Writing Worksops:  We are fully involved in poetry!  We are reading and writing poems and are really getting into it.  The class is going to have a tough time selecting their poems for our poetry reading on June 10th.

Highlights of the Week May 6


  • Today we talked about the Kentucky Derby. (Miss D.)
  • The fastest horse wins a wreath of red roses.(EW)
  • There are about 15 horses in the race.  (HB)
  • If you win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes it is called winning the Triple Crown.  (JF and DG)
  • We used Wikipedia to learn about the big horse race.  On the web site it had a graph.  Secretariat was the fasted horse so far.  His time was 1 minute and 59 seconds.  (KK and JF)
  • Ladies wear fancy hats.  (CB)
  • CF and KE were great co-captains.  (AK) From now on there will be co-captains because we are running out of days.
  • In gym we did hurtles.  (KK)
  • In gym we did javelin throwing. (DG)
  • In gym we raced 4th graders. (CF)
  • In music we are practicing for the "Pass It On" show.  (CH)
  • We each are giving $1 to buy a special gift for Mr. Allen.  (CH)
  • In art we traced lizards.  (AB)  We colored patterns and cut them out.  (AK)  We are learning about Native American artwork.  (Mrs. T)  Miss Ward was a substitute for art.  (CF)
  • In Writing Workshop we started learning about poetry.  (MC)  We are writing poems in our poetry notebooks.  (KS)  We wrote Mystery Poems, Repeated Line Poems, First-Last and List Poems.  (KL and KS and MC)
  • Miss Courtney finished typing our Realistic Fiction hardcover books.  (MM)
  • We are illustrating our hardcover books.  (CH)
  • In our chapter book, we learned how Charlotte is going to save Wilbur's life.  (AK)  Charlotte wove "Some Pig" and "Terrific" into her web.  Her next word is going to be "Radiant".  (Miss D. and CF and DG)
  • It is getting warmer and warmer every day.  (KE)

Thank You!

Thank you for all the beautiful flowers for Teacher Appreciation Day.  The vases of flowers brightened up our classroom on this cloudy day and they smell wonderful.

Peek at the Week of May 2-6

  • It's May!  Only two more months of school...so hard to believe.  We started
  • The end of the year gets very, very busy with so many things wrapping up.  Here are the important dates that I have so far for our first grade class:
May 6:  Book Fair at 12:50 in the library
May 26:  Field Day from 12:45-2:15 outside
May 27:  Rain Date for Field Day 12:45-2:15
June 3:  First Grade Musical at 9:30 in the Common Room
June 10:  Poet Palooza at 2:30 in the classroom

  • Reading Workshop:  We are experts on story elements!  This week we will begin a new unit on poerty.  We will have the chance to read all different kinds of poems.  We will be learing some new vocabulary specific to poetry.  Some of these new words and concepts are:  line, stanza, rhyme, rythme, mood and tone.  I will also be starting the Year-end reading assessments this week too.
  • Writing Workshop:  We will be finishing our hard-cover book illustrations while we also begin to learn a few techniques of writing poetry. 
  • Math:  This week's lessons will be:  Combining 2-D Shapes, Dissecting 2-D Shapes, Finding and Describing Symmetry and Visualizing Symmetrical Shapes.
