Peek at the Week of March 28- April 1

  • It's the last week of March-Wow!

  • Miss Ward's last day of Student-Teaching was this past Friday.  We will be very sad to not have her with us every day, but we know that we will still see her because she will continue to be an all-building intern until the end of the year.  I know she enjoyed the books everyone donated to her gift bag.

Highlights of the Week March 25

  • Today is Miss Ward's last day teaching us. (LJD)  We will have a party this afternoon.  (CF)  I hope Miss Ward comes back to sub for us.  (CH)  We will really miss Miss Ward.  (KK) She was a really, really good teacher.  (MC) We will give her a secret gift at her party this afternoon.  I know she will LOVE it! (Miss D.)  Miss Ward made star cookies for the party.  (CH)  I hope her next year's class really likes her.  (KK)  We made cards for Miss Ward.  (DG)
  • CB was a good captain.  (SS)
  • MC will be next week's captain.  (CH)
  • In art we drew pictures of ourselves for Mr. Rechi.  (JF)  In art we are making plants called irises like Vincent VanGogh.  (MC) We are using oil pastels.  They get a little messy.  (Miss D.)
  • In gym we learned about double-dutch jumprope.  We did regular jumprope. (KK)  Two people jumped at the same time.  (CB)
  • In music we are practicing "Move It" and "Pass It On".  (MC)  
  • Today we are going to have Game Day.  (LMD)
  • Today we are going to have a Mystery Reader.  (CH)
  • Today we have library and computer.  (CH)
  • Today is the last Friday of the month so we have free choice computer.  (AK and KK)
  • Today we are having a spelling test.  (JF)
  • In math we worked on learning doubles facts and doubles-plus-one facts and doubles-plus-two facts.  (KS)
  • In math we are learning doubles.  (AB)
  • We are working on book 2 in math.  (AMS)
  • In Reading Workshop we started a Character Club on Monday.  (CF)  We are working in groups and talking about a character.  (EW).  Next week we will do a puppet show with our character.  (HB)
  • In Writing Workshop we are almost finished with our All-Abouts.  (MC)
  • The white carnations turned light green.  We will take them home today to show our families.  (GS)

Peek at the Week of March 21-25

Happy Spring! It felt like it was never going to come.

This is Miss Ward's last full week being with us.  Her official last day will be next Monday, March 28th.  I know the kids will miss having her in our classroom every day, but we will still see her because she will continue her internship through the end of the year.  Thank you

This Friday we are having our third Board Game Day at 2:30.  The class is looking forward to it.

Highlights of the Week March 18



  • HB was a great captain.  (DG)
  • CB will be the next captain.  (CH)
  • We had 3 half days.  On one day we went to SoNo Fieldhouse.  (CF)  We played kickball and soccer.  (DG)  The boys wore orange shirts and the girls wore pink shirts.  (KK)  The boys knocked over all the obstacles.  It was a great show!  (CH)  
  • In gym we played a game called "Sit".  (JF)  We also played mat ball.  (AK)  We played basketball too.  (LMD)
  • In music class we learned a new song.  It will be in the First Grade Musical.  (AB)  We had to sit in a special order for the show.  (MC)  We also learned a song called "Don't Drop the Ball".  (CF)
  • Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day.  (MM)  We wore green clothes.  (EW)  If you didn't wear green, Miss Dineen would pinch you.  (CH)  Miss Ward looked like Lucky the Leprechaun from the Lucky Charms cereal box.  (KK)  We had some Lucky Charms for a special snack.  KL brought in mini-cupcakes with shamrock sprinkles.  (Miss D.)
  • In art we drew shapes that had patterns under them.  (KS)  We are making vases.  We have to color them in like Vincent Van Gogh.  (MC)  We learned that Vincent VanGogh cut off his ear.  (AK)  We made spring baskets.  (AMS)
  • Miss Ward brought in flowers.  (SM)  We put some green food coloring in a cup of water.  (KL)  We learned a song about plants.  (LMD)  We are waiting to see if the flowers turn green.  (CH)
  • It was my 7th birthday!  (AMS)
  • Today is Miss Almonte's bday.  (CH)
  • In math we learned about weights.  (JF)
  • In 1 hour we will have a Mystery Reader.  (EW)
  • Spring will begin this Sunday.  (MC)
  • It is finally warm and sunny!  Maybe as a fun Friday treat we will get an extra recess at the end of the day (only if we cooperate and get ALL of our work done).  (Miss D.)

Animal Research Projects





We wrapped up our Non-fiction unit of study with animal research projects.  The groups read books about their animal, designed a poster with labeled body parts, made a list of fast facts and then quizzed our classmates.

A Peek at the Week of March 14-18

March conferences will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  These days will be Early Dismissal days.  We will have lunch, but there will not be afternoon snack.

Please send in the book gift for Miss Ward by this Friday, March 18th.  We will be celebrating her last day of Student-teaching next week.

Highlights of the Week March 11

  • AB was a great captain.  (DG)
  • Next week's captain will be HB.  Everyone will be getting a second turn at being the captain.  (JF)
  • We celebrated CH's birthday.  Her mom brought in fudgicles.  (KE)
  • We finished reading Superfudge.  (EW)  It was really good.  (KE)
  • Today we will start a new chapter book called Fudgeamania.  I think it will be really good.  (CH)
  • In gym we played matball.  (JF)
  • Today we will celebrate AS's birthday with donuts.  His real birthday is next week.  (MC)
  • Everyone will bring home their report cards today.  I bet a lot of parents are going to be really proud of their first grader.  (Miss D.)
  • We will have a spelling test today.  (KK)
  • We are going to have a Mystery Reader in 1 hour.  (MM)
  • We started a new picture in art.  We are painting the sky and are going to add flowers and clouds to the sky.  (JF)
  • LMD's painting is going to be hung in the Darien Library for the whole town to see.  (AK)  I bet L's family will take a little trip to see his painting.  (Miss D.)
  • In music we learned a kite song.   We played it on the xylophones and the drums and the tambourines.  (MC)
  • This weekend we will turn the clocks ahead 1 hour on Saturday night.  This will give us more daylight hours after school.  (Miss D.)
  • In Writing Workshop we started writing All About books.  (AMS)
  • In Reading Workshop we are studying characters.  (CH)
  • In Reading Workshop we have been having a lot of wrap-ups.  (MC)  A wrap-up is when some people share their books with the class.  They tell about connections or something they learned or they do a 'book commercial' where they tell the class how great a book is. (GC)

Pennies for Patients

The Student Council is sponsoring a fund raiser called Pennies for Patients.  This is a collection for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Connecticut.  Money of any kind can be sent in, not just pennies!

Highlights of the Week March 4

  • EW was a good captain. (KE)
  • AB will be the next captain.  (KK)
  • Next week we will go back to captain #1 because everyone had 1 turn.  (MM)
  • In art we are making clay baskets for spring.  (GC)
  • We ate green eggs and ham in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.  (KK)
  • Six moms and 1 cute little brother came in to cook and serve breakfast to our class.  (Miss D.)
  • We also watched a video about the Green Eggs and Ham after Miss Ward read the book to us.  (CH)
  • We started writing All About books in Writing Workshop.  (EW)
  • We started a unit on characters in Reading Workshop. (KE)
  • Miss Ward has been teaching everything and she is doing a great job! (Miss D.)
  • We learned about the Titanic because AMS brought in a really cool book about it.  The Titanic hit an iceberg and it sunk.  Many people died and it was very sad.  (AK)
  • Today we had a pep rally for February.  CH and AH won the award! (JF)
  • We played mat ball in gym.  It was Miss D.'s favorite gym game when she was in school.  (SS)
  • The front purple table won table points for February.  Those 4 kids get free time on the computer all of next week!  (MC)
  • We switched seats for the new month of school.  (MM)
