Peek at the Week of March 1-5

Salute to Seuss!

This week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday with a special Green Eggs and Ham breakfast. Thank you in advance to the moms who will be providing and cooking the food. It promises to be a fun day. Please send in any Dr. Seuss books you have (with your name written inside the books) to share with the class during the week. Try to dress like the Cat in the Hat by wearing black, red and white.

Please continue to send in the gifts for Miss Montesarchio. Remind your children to bring their book to Mrs. Trifiatis' classroom.

Peek at the Week of February 22-26

Welcome back from Winter Break!

I hope everyone had a relaxing time with their families. We will get back into the swing of things here at school.

Math: Miss Montesarchio will start a new unit. Unit 6 is the last unit of Volume 1. I know the class is excited to start our second math book very soon.

Reading Workshop: Before break we were studying the genre of non-fiction. That unit of study culminated with a weeklong project called 'Buddy Study'. Now we will spend some time on a unit called "Word Power". This unit focuses on word patterns, word roots, prefixes, suffixes and vocabulary development. We will also learn about using context clues to help to figure out 'tricky words'.

Phonics/Spelling: This week's list is on words that have Y as a vowel: funny, my, why, many, try. Sometimes the y makes the sound of long e or long i.

Writing Workshop: Miss Montesarchio is going to start our next non-fiction writing unit called "All Abouts". During this unit we will learn how to use planning sheets to 'map out' our ideas. The goal is to publish a chapter book. For example, a book called "All About the Seasons" could have 1 chapter for each season. Another example would be a bood called "All About Cats" and the chapters in that book might be: The Body, Cat's Diet, Caring for Pet Cats.

Social Studies: We will be learning about our government and our nation's capital.

Peek at the Week of February 8-12

This is the last week of school before Winter Break.  It's going to be a busy week.

Reading Workshop:  We finished up our non-fiction unit of study last week.  This week we are going to have fun reading Valentine related stories and explore the theme of friendship and caring in these books.

Writing Workshop:  We are finishing our How To books and they are fabulous!  Look for them on the hallway bulletin board after break.

Spelling/Phonics:  This week will be a long vowel review.  The words are:  AWAY, PLEASE, NIGHT, THOSE, CUTE.

Math:  We will be taking the Topic 5 assessment this week and starting Topic 6.  Miss Montesarchio is doing a great job teaching math.

Science:  Last week we had a great visit by a scientist on shadows.  It was a great tie in to Groundhog Day.

Social Studies:  We will be starting to learn about "Wants and Needs".  This topic is timely in terms of the earthquake in Haiti.  The focus on this unit is to learn about the things all human beings need versus the things we want.

Valentine's Day:  We will be celebrating Valentine's Day this Friday with a lunch pizza party in our classroom.  The Room Moms will be reminding the parents who signed up for paper goods, drinks, pizza and dessert.  If your child doesn't want pizza for lunch, please make sure to send in a lunch for them.  We will be decorating bags for collecting all of our cards.  Some families have told me they are leaving early for vacation.  Reassure your child that we will make sure they get their cards after break.  Cards can be sent in before Friday.
